Smiley claims PBS made mistake in ouster, but PBS fires back

NEW YORK (AP) — Tavis Smiley has defended himself from allegations he
had sexual relationships with subordinates and created an abusive
workplace environment, denying any wrongdoing and saying PBS made a
mistake by suspending him from his talk show. PBS almost immediately
fired back, saying he “needs to get his story straight.”
He told ABC’s “Good Morning America” Monday that he’s never coerced
anyone into a relationship but has had consensual relationships in the
workplace. He said those relationships weren’t forbidden by the company
he owns and he claims he never promoted or fired anyone based on their
relationship with him.
“I’ve never groped. I’ve never coerced, I’ve never exposed myself
inappropriately to anyone in 30 years,” Smiley said. “I’ve made mistakes
— I’m human. I’m not perfect. But it doesn’t rise to the level of
wrongful termination.”
Smiley said Monday that he applauds women coming forward to share
their sexual assault and harassment experiences “to lead us in a
conversation about how to create healthy workspaces.”
At the same time, he said “I want to make sure we don’t lose all
sense of nuance and proportionality in this conversation, because if we
do then people end up being guilty simply by accusation.”
PBS responded in a matter of hours, saying Smiley’s acknowledgement
of multiple relationships contradicted his previous statements.
“Tavis Smiley needs to get his story straight,” it said in a
statement, which also promised more accusations: “Additional allegations
are continuing to come to light since last week’s announcement.”
PBS also derided Smiley’s claim that he applauds women who have come
forward, pointing out that Smiley’s company hinders such actions by
requiring former and current employees to sign non-disclosure
agreements. “Witnesses who have bravely come forward to speak with the
independent investigators retained by PBS report a fear of retribution
for speaking out,” it said.
Smiley’s career took a huge hit last week when PBS said it was
suspending him following an independent investigation by a law firm that
uncovered “multiple, credible allegations of conduct that is
inconsistent with the values and standards of PBS.”
Then fallout was swift: Walmart, a sponsor, cut ties with him and
live producer Mills Entertainment pulled out of backing Smiley’s
upcoming theatrical show that was to focus on the last year of Martin
Luther King Jr.’s life. Hay House, which distributes the Smiley Books
imprint, said all Smiley projects were “on hold” pending an internal
review.
As to accusations he created a verbally abusive and threatening work
place, Smiley admitted many of his TV and radio projects are intense at
times but said “I’m not an angry black man and this notion of a hostile
environment just doesn’t fit.” He added that no complaints about him
have ever been raised.
Smiley’s suspension comes weeks after PBS cut ties with anchor and
talk show host Charlie Rose, citing “extremely disturbing and
intolerable behavior” by him toward women at his PBS talk show. The
actions against Smiley and Rose follow dozens of firings and suspensions
of prominent men who have been accused of sexual misconduct or
harassment.

Superchef Mario Batali has stepped away from his restaurant empire and
ABC’s “The Chew” following allegations of sexual misconduct.
Four women have accused the famous foodie of groping and other
inappropriate touching while they worked for him, according to an Eater report. The accusations date back two decades.
“I apologize to the people I have mistreated and hurt. Although the
identities of most of the individuals mentioned in these stories have
not been revealed to me, much of the behavior described does, in fact,

Now this bitch was examined top to bottom and THEIR doctors found NO EVIDENCE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT OR RAPE!! Should have been the end of it right; wrong!!! Prominent Russians expressed anger, despair and resentment on Wednesday
after the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ban the Russian
Federation from the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.
The ban
is a historic act of punishment for widespread doping among Russian
athletes that Olympic officials believe was supported by the government.
It
was a body blow for a nation that prides itself on its sporting prowess
and was ecstatic over its victory in the 2014 Winter Olympics medal
count. Just four years later, the Russian Federation’s count will be
zero, and the country is considering a boycott.
Mikhail
Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader celebrated in the West for helping
end the Cold War, called the IOC decision “outrageous.” The decision
would ban Russia’s flag and anthem but allow individual athletes to
compete under a special designation, as Olympic Athlete from Russia
(OAR).
“It’s just bad, and that’s it,” Gorbachev told the state sport news agency, R-Sport. “It’s sport, damn it.”

I had the displeasure of working for Amazon at their Obetz Ohio warehouse around September. At first I liked the job coz' after so long without a decent job I was glad to have anything. Well from the start it just tanked like a sub that hit by a torpedo. The young managers there felt like they could talk to me any kind of disrespectful way. They did everything but call me the n'word. And I could tell they really wished they could. Wasn't just the management either, but it was mostly them. They kept riding me the whole time I was there claiming I wasn't doing the work right. You see I was older than all of them and they wanted me to act like those other older blacks who were kissing their asses and thought it proper to prostrate themselves to kids who should have been showing them proper respect for a pay check. I needed a pay check too, but not at the expense of my dignity as an older man and a human being. I was shocked to see how racist they were at this place and nothing was being done about it. I should have known something was up when I saw that none of the managers were black and the other blacks knew what time it was but ignored it. I couldn't though coz' I was a man and where I'm from kids show proper respect to their elders. My manager some racist young female made it a point to fuck with me everyday trying every way she could to humiliate me and degrade me. When I told one of the other staff members I intended to go to HR on her they transferred her quickly to their Detroit operation or somewhere in Michigan. I'm sure they'll have a 'memory' lapse as it seems that was the kind of racist games they played. Then they got the next girl working on me. She would come to me and tell me that some other staff member had complained about me. She thought it was funny when I would ask who it was and she would give me some bullshit assed story that she couldn't tell me. Now if she can't tell me who this accuser was, why was she telling me about some alleged accusation. She would laugh about it as if something was so very funny. I would tell other Blacks who worked there about it, of course you can't tell a worm to stand up coz' it doesn't have a backbone. Well I searched onliine for the Amzaon office so I could report this racist nonsense that was going on here, but I didn't find anywhere where I could report to management about what was going on in this Obetz facility. I couldn't find anywhere. Coz' I waned to tell them that they needed to reconsider building their next big facility here in Columbus Ohio and they needed to go down here to Obetz and take a look at what the management here is doing. They were hassling me everyday and so I just decided not to go back and checked with quite a few lawyers to see what kind of lawsuit I could file. The problem is that the mangement of Amazon could claim they didn't know what was going on which I find is bullshit! I would remind Amazon too I am or was a customer of theirs too an so this is how you treat your customers. Since I don't have a job now thanks to these racist bastards who run your Obetz facility I have plenty of time on my hands to work on organizing a nationwide boycott of your company! Support your racist staff there. We'll see what your bottom line looks like when I manage to get millions of African Americans to boycott your company. I spent quite a bit of money with you, but there are other places I and others can go to spend our money since you employ people who have no respect for older people and African Americans! Tribute for missing North Carolina 3 year-old toddler found dead

(CNN VAN) Community visits makeshift memorial for missing 3-year-old Mariah Woods.
Saturday Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller
announced that law enforcement officials have found what appears to be
the body of missing three-year-old Mariah Woods.
Woods mother's live-in boyfriend Earl Kimrey,
reported her missing Monday morning after putting her to bed in their
Jacksonville home the previous night.
Kimrey was being held on more than $1 million
bond at the Onslow County Detention Center following his arrest for
concealing a death, obstruction of justice and other charges, the Onslow
County Sheriff's Office said.
The news was announced that a Fayetteville
dive team made the discovery Saturday evening in Shelter Creek along
Shaw Highway in Pender County.

A pregnant woman who was allegedly
set on fire by her boyfriend in Maryland gave birth seven weeks early to
a baby girl, reports said.
Laquinn Phillips, 34, is accused of
setting his girlfriend, Andrea Grinage, 30, on fire during a domestic
incident just before 12 p.m. Friday at their apartment in Capitol
Heights, FOX5 DC reported. Grinage banged on neighbors’ door looking for help, suffering from severe burns throughout her body.
"She was very brave," Prince George's County police
spokesperson Jennifer Donelan said. "We want her family to know how
brave she was, suffering as badly as she was, critically burned, worried
about her unborn child, dealing with those injuries and was able to
share that information with us so that we could get moving with our
investigation and locate this person."
Police said they could see smoke billowing from the second and third floors of the apartment building.
Grinage went into early labor when she was rushed to
the hospital. She and her newborn girl are in critical condition, the
victim’s mother told the news station.
Phillips was arrested after he turned himself in. He
faces charges including first and second-degree attempted murder, arson
and assault.
Okay this is some bullshit. You trying to tell me that nobody heard that
kid being snatched from a small-assed trailor? It's time to start

Authorities
in South Carolina searched intently Thursday for a missing toddler who
was last seen nearly two months ago, and whose pregnant mother has been
charged with cruelty toward a child.
Columbia
police Chief Randy Scott told Vinnie Politan, of CNN's sister network
HLN, that law enforcement launched their search for Amir Jennings after
receiving what they considered "a credible tip."
Officers
from multiple agencies -- including the FBI, Richland County Sheriff's
Department, Columbia-Richland Fire Department and Columbia police --
scoured an 8-square-mile area near a small rural church, said Jennifer
Timmons, a spokeswoman for Columbia police.
"We were able to go to the area to do a grid search," said Scott. "... And fortunately, it did not turn up anything."
Amir Jennings was 17 months old when he was last seen with his mother, Zinah D. Jennings, 22, around Thanksgiving, police said.
Family
members became concerned when they could not contact Jennings or the
child, and a missing-person report was filed in early December, police
have said.
On Christmas Eve, police said, Jennings had a car accident and the responding officer recognized her name.
The
officer repeatedly asked Jennings where her child was, and she
allegedly gave "false and inconsistent information," police said. A
warrant was issued on December 29.
According
to a police report, the mother made "cryptic" phone calls to family
members, indicating her ongoing fight with depression was continuing.
This
week, Zinah Jennings' attorney Hemphill Pride II filed a motion asking
for the court to consider a reduction of the $150,000 bond. The lawyer
said in the motion that his client "emphatically denies she is guilty"
of the cruelty to children charges and that she is not a flight risk.
The
motion cites a court-ordered report from Dr. Michael Ferlauto that
claims Zinah Jennings is "mentally ill" and lacks the "insight or
capacity to make responsible decisions with respect to his/her
treatment."
Also, according to the motion, Zinah Jennings is pregnant.
"It's
shocking, disappointing," Scott said of the case. "Right now, she's not
even giving law enforcement anything on her son, her precious son that

Conyers hospitalized, Pelosi calls on him to resign

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other
top House Democrats on Thursday increased the pressure on Rep. John
Conyers, who is facing multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and a
House Ethics Committee probe, by calling on him to resign from office.
Pelosi's comments are a stark turnaround from
her stance on Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" when she praised the
Michigan Democrat as an "icon," questioned who his accusers are, and
said the ethics probe should be allowed to go forward.
"Congressman Conyers should resign," Pelosi told reporters on Thursday.
"The allegations against Congressman Conyers,
as we've heard more and more since Sunday, are serious, disappointing
and very credible," she added. "It's very sad. A brave woman came
forward...Zero tolerance means consequences for everyone — no matter how
great a legacy is no license to harass or discriminate."

Conyers' attorney, however, defiantly rejected
Pelosi's calls for his client to resign and insisted no such decision
would be coming any time soon.
"It is not up to Nancy Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi
did not elect Mr. Conyers," the attorney, Arnold Reed, said at a press
conference Thursday in Detroit. "And she sure as hell won't be the one
to tell the congressman to leave."
Reed, who said there would be no decision from
Conyers about his future on Thursday or Friday, also criticized Pelosi
for demanding the lawmaker quit while not doing the same for Sen. Al
Franken, D-Minn., who is facing a growing number of accusations of
sexual misconduct. The Senate Ethics Committee announced on Thursday it
had opened an investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations
against Franken.
Meanwhile, the highest-ranking
African-American Democrat in Congress, Rep. Jim Clyburn of South
Carolina, and House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, of Maryland, both said
later Thursday that they felt Conyers should step down.
Clyburn's office confirmed to NBC News that he
believes it is in Conyers' best interest to leave, while Hoyer said it
was "appropriate for him to resign."
Earlier Thursday, Conyers' political
consultant Sam Riddle told WDIV-TV that Conyers had been hospitalized
due to stress and he blamed the "media assault" stemming from the
allegations against the lawmaker.
"The congressman's health is not what it
should be and a lot of that is directly attributable to this media
assault," Riddle said, adding that "the reality is these serial accusers
have done this before, we're used to it."
Conyers is "resting comfortably in an area
hospital, he's doing OK, as well as can be expected for a gentleman that
is approaching 90 years of age," Riddle said.
Conyers flew home to Detroit from Washington on Tuesday night, amid pressure from some of his Democratic colleagues to resign from Congress.
Earlier Thursday, a former aide came forward publicly and urged Conyers to admit what he did and apologize.
Marion Brown, a former deputy chief of staff
to Conyers, told NBC's "TODAY" show that she decided to go public
because she "felt compelled to stand up and speak out, to be a voice
behind these allegations that I made."
"All I want from the congressman is to
acknowledge what he did and apologize for me, to me, for calling me a
liar," Brown said.

Arrest of suspected killer puts Tampa neighborhood at ease
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — After enduring almost two months of fear, a Tampa
neighborhood breathed a sigh of relief Wednesday after authorities
announced the arrest of a suspected serial killer, a recent college
graduate who police say gave himself away after asking a co-worker to
hold a bag containing a handgun.
Howell Emanuel Donaldson, who was working as crew chief at a
McDonald’s, was charged with four counts of first-degree murder in a
string of shootings that targeted people near bus stops.
“We had a community that was on edge,” Mayor Bob Buckhorn said.
“Today the light shines. The darkness is over. This community begins the
healing process.”
Neighbors of the 24-year-old — who lived in a different area of Tampa
than where the slayings took place — said they recently saw him playing
basketball with his younger brother in the driveway of the family’s
suburban home. Now they’re watching news of him on television, puzzled
as to how a kid who went to college in New York on a basketball
scholarship ended up behind bars.
“He’s very nice. He waves, very polite,” said neighbor Kelly Fabian,
who said she walked Donaldson to school when he was younger. “Quiet kid.
It’s a shocker.”
Arrest records did not list an attorney for Donaldson, and the police
chief said he did not know if the suspect had a lawyer yet. He’s
scheduled to make a first court appearance Thursday in Hillsborough
County.
The arrest, which happened Tuesday night, brought immense relief to
the anxious neighborhood of Seminole Heights, which had stopped many
outdoor activities since the first death on Oct. 9. Two more fatal
shootings happened in the weeks that followed, and residents were so
scared that police escorted children while they trick-or-treated. The
fourth killing happened earlier this month.
“I think in this situation it’s a lose-lose no matter how you look at
it, except for a magical thing like when a community — organizations,
law enforcement — come together unified and can put somebody behind
bars,” said Brittany Lott, who said she has not walked her bulldogs in
51 days, choosing to spend time in the backyard instead.
The crack in the case came Tuesday when Donaldson brought a bag
holding a loaded Glock .40-caliber handgun to McDonald’s and asked a
co-worker to hold it while he went across the street, authorities said.
Restaurant workers thought Donaldson’s request was odd. When he left,
they reported the gun to a police officer who was doing paperwork
there, setting off an investigation. When he returned to the restaurant,
officers were waiting.
In addition to matching shell casings found at the shootings,
authorities said location data from Donaldson’s cellphone put him at the
scene of at least three of the killings.
“The gun is what we needed,” Police Chief Brian Dugan said at a news conference surrounded by family members of the victims.
Donaldson did not live in the neighborhood where the shootings occurred and told investigators he was unfamiliar with it.
Robert Hoffa, the uncle of victim Monica Hoffa, said he was
“overjoyed” when Tampa police called him to say they had made an arrest.
“This is about family. This is about community. This is about everybody sticking together,” he said.
Authorities have not been able to determine why Donaldson chose the
Seminole Heights neighborhood. Although he’s been cooperative and
friendly to officers, the suspect did not shed any light on his motive
or why he targeted individual victims, the police chief said.
Donaldson graduated from St. John’s University in New York in
January. He was a walk-on for the men’s basketball team during the
2011-12 season but never played in a game, school spokesman Brian Browne
said.
After graduating, he worked in customer support at the Ultimate
Medical Academy, a school that trains workers for health care jobs. He
started there Feb. 13 and worked for about three months before being
fired for absenteeism. The academy said he passed a background check
before he was hired.
His LinkedIn account also listed a job as a “guest experience host”
for the New York Mets in 2016. The Mets would neither confirm nor deny
that he was employed there.
Police in New York said Donaldson was arrested in May 2014, but the
arrest was sealed and no details were available. Authorities planned to
review cold cases to see if Donaldson could be linked to any crimes
there.
Donaldson bought the gun and a 20-round box of bullets from Shooter’s
World in Tampa on Oct. 3. He picked it up after the four-day waiting
period, and the first killing happened two days after that.
The arrest report said police found clothing inside Donaldson’s car
that was similar to what was worn by a person spotted in surveillance
video taken the night of the first shooting.
Residents and police had been on edge since Oct. 9, when 22-year-old Benjamin Mitchell was shot to death.
On Oct. 11, 32-year-old Monica Hoffa was slain, followed on Oct. 19
by 20-year-old Anthony Naiboa, who was killed after taking the wrong bus
home from his new job. The final victim, 60-year-old Ronald Felton, was
killed Nov. 14.
All of the October victims were either getting on or off a city bus, or were at a bus stop when they were shot, police said.

John Crawford's Family Sues Walmart, Police for Wrongful Death

The family of John Crawford III is suing Walmart and the Beavercreek, Ohio, police department for wrongful death after the 22-year-old father was shot and killed in August.
Crawford was shot by a Beavercreek police officer responding to a 911
call about a man with a gun at Walmart; Crawford was holding a BB gun
that he'd found unattended in the store. A grand jury in September
declined to indict the officer or his partner for the fatal shooting. The Washington Post reports that Crawford's family is seeking more than $75,000 in damages.
Why is Walmart being sued over Crawford's death?
Pellet Gun Left Unpackaged
Police responded to a 911 call that alleged a man was inside Walmart
pointing a gun at others. The caller, Ronald Ritchie, later recanted
that part of the story, telling The Guardian that Crawford didn't point the gun at anybody. When officers encountered Crawford, he was carrying what appeared to be a weapon but was in fact a pellet rifle.
Crawford's family claims that because Walmart failed to keep toy guns
like the pellet rifle behind glass or in packaging, it is liable for
the reasonably foreseeable result of Crawford walking through the store
holding the toy gun. The plaintiffs claim that with its cameras,
employees, and knowledge of police entering the Walmart, the store
breached its duty to Crawford by not securing the toy gun or warning him
of the danger.
These breaches of duty are alleged under both negligence and premises liability
theories, but they essentially press the same point: Walmart knew of
the danger associated with the loose gun and police and failed to act
leading to Crawford's death. Damages for Crawford's Death
As part of the wrongful death suit, the family has allegedly suffered
"grief, depression, and severe emotional distress." While emotional
distress damages are often hard to nail down, it won't prevent a jury from potentially putting a number to Crawford's family's grief or unrest related to his death.
In addition to the wrongful death action, the family has also alleged
damages for the pain, suffering, and anxiety visited on Crawford before
his death as part of a survival action.
Some states, like Ohio, allow personal injury claims to actually
survive the death of the plaintiff, allowing his family to collect his
damages. Allegations Against Beavercreek Police
The suit also names the two officers involved in the shooting, the
City of Beavercreek, and Beavercreek's police chief as liable for
Crawford's death.
According to the Post, the lawsuit
asserts Crawford "was shot before he even had time to react to the
officer's presence, much less to comply with any verbal commands." It
also says the officers failed to determine whether the 911 caller's
information was accurate before opening fire.
In a statement, Beavercreek's city attorney said he believes the
officers' actions were justified. If the case proceeds to trial, a jury
may get the final word.Joh
