So prince Harry's new girlfriend is black. And some of the british press showed their racist views trying to intimidate the prince into finding him a good girl; a white girl. So much for britain's supposed liberal views.
So it's true: Prince Harry has a new girlfriend: Meghan Markle, the 35-year-old American star of USA's legal drama Suits.
He confirmed it Tuesday in a statement that, while massaged by
Kensington Palace staff, was clearly written in his own voice. And he is
not pleased.
Until now, the palace has declined to comment because Harry's love life is a "private" matter. So why did the ginger prince take the extraordinary step of talking publicly and why is he so royally ticked off?
It's because Harry, 32, feels "a line has been crossed" in the week since the tabloids learned of the relationship. That's led, he said, to a racially-tinged media "smear" campaign and harassment of Markle's family, friends and colleagues, as well as attempts to break into her home and bribe her ex-boyfriend.
The palace declined to tell USA TODAY which stories Harry found objectionable. But he might have been referring to the Daily Mail's
Nov. 2 piece, headlined, "Harry's girl is (almost) straight outta
Compton: Gang-scarred home of her mother revealed — so will he be
dropping by for tea?"
Markle grew up in Los Angeles but films Suits in Toronto. She met Harry there in May when the Afghanistan veteran was in town promoting the Invictus Games.
Here's what else we know about her:
She's three years older than Harry.
The brunette beauty is biracial, with a black mother and white father.
She graduated from Northwestern University in 2003, is active on social media and interested in humanitarian causes, much like Harry.
She is a foodie and has two adopted dogs.
What we don't know: Whether she's met his family yet or if he's met hers. The palace hasn't said.
But the media, especially in Britain, are on the hunt for anything they can find out about this potential mate for Harry, who's been without a girlfriend since 2014.
While Harry is familiar with tabloid tactics, after watching them relentlessly pursue his late mother, Princess Diana, the statement contends they've gone too far in subjecting Markle to "a wave of abuse and harassment.
"Some
of this has been very public — the smear on the front page of a
national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the
outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article
comments," the statement said.
Harry is worried about Markle's safety and upset that he can't protect her from the "storm" of media coverage. "This is not a game — it is her life and his."
Harry expressed the hope that his "unusual" statement will calm down the coverage. He is scheduled to leave Nov. 20 on a two-week tour of Caribbean nations on behalf of his grandmother, the queen.
"There'll be those in Buckingham Palace who'll appreciate his pain, but who'll question the wisdom of issuing this statement," wrote BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt. "Prince Harry is appealing to the better judgment of newspaper editors and their readers. Will they listen?"
